Besides the helpers who accompany the runner throughout the race, there are people from the opposing team running with the runners to make sure they don't cheat. If the ball is lost at any time during the race, that runner automatically loses. During the night the helpers burn sticks full of natural pine pitch as torches to guide the runner.
